Troubleshooting Wi-Fi and Network Issues at Home
Is your internet slow or constantly disconnecting? Wi-Fi problems are common in many households—but luckily, most can be fixed without much hassle. Here’s how to get your network running smoothly again.
1. Restart Your Modem and Router
The classic fix. Turn off both the modem and router, wait 30 seconds, then turn them back on. This often clears out minor connection hiccups and refreshes your IP address.
2. Check for Interference
Other electronics like cordless phones, microwaves, or thick walls can block your Wi-Fi signal. Try moving your router to a central, elevated location for better coverage.
3. Forget and Reconnect
On your device, go to Wi-Fi settings, forget the network, and reconnect. This can clear up any saved credentials or configuration issues.
4. Update Your Router Firmware
Old firmware can cause instability. Log into your router (usually by typing 192.168.1.1 in your browser) and check for updates under settings.
5. Test with an Ethernet Cable
If the internet works when plugged in directly via Ethernet, the issue is with your Wi-Fi, not your provider. This helps narrow down the cause.
Bonus: Upgrade Your Equipment
If your router is more than 5 years old, it may not handle modern speeds or devices well. Consider upgrading to a dual-band or mesh Wi-Fi system.
